Uckers

Uckers is a little known strategic board game whose rules were created by members of the Royal Navy and played in the messes of war ships for fun and humiliation. It is a 2 player game where each player plays 2 colours.

It uses a standard Ludo board but the rules are far from those of Ludo. The use of 2 dice and the ability for players to stack their pieces to form barriers introduce a whole new strategic and fun slant to this ancient game.

I decided that it would be a great game for XBOX 360 and am developing it for the Dream Build Play 2008 Competition, also with a view to releasing it within the 360′s upcoming XBOX Live XNA community marketplace.

Note: Uckers is not being actively developed at this time.

My apologies to those of you who remain interested in Uckers. Time is not permitting at present.

Wow, it’s Spring 2009 already and I didn’t progress Uckers over Winter. However that is now set to change. Dream Build Play 2009 has just started this week and Uckers work will resume in earnest with a focus on AI and XBOX Live versus play and hopefully 4 player coop too. Stay tuned!

Alas Uckers did not win in the DBP competition amongst the many excellent games. But nevermind, work is now in progress to release Uckers on the now live XBOX Community Games Channel in the NXE. AI and multiplayer will both feature in the final release. There is currently no definite date for release, I want to make sure it’s as good as I can get it. Q1 2009 is where I am aiming for.

So the Dream Build Play 2008 competition deadline came and went and a version of Uckers was submitted. It does not have everything in it just yet, those features will come for the community games release. Here is a video of the DBP entry.
